Smile bud was invented back in the lat 2000's (no specific timeframe) as a desktop assistant similar to bonzibuddy and the likes. The team consisted of 1 artist, one coder, and 1 director. From here, the timeline is foggy but an open v1 was eventually released and a website made. The website was barebones, consisting of a small description and a download link. The program had almost no functionality as well, simply walking around and occasionally stopping.
Work on a v2 was started as well. Development was longer this time, with more features planned. More and better quality art was introduced as well. Over time, smilebuddy eventually took form. The website now included a longer description with pictures and the like, but no background. The program could now do many things, such as climb on walls and ceilings and duplicate. A talk feature was discussed as well but not implemented correctly.
